Elon Musk: Artificial intelligence presents 'vastly more risk than North Korea'

Getty Images Elon Musk tweeted some warnings about artificial intelligence on Friday night. "If you're not concerned about AI safety, you should be. Vastly more risk than North Korea," Musk tweeted after his $1 billion startup, OpenAI, made a surprise appearance at a $24 million video game tournament Friday night, beating the world's best players in the video game, "Dota 2." Musk claimed OpenAI's bot was the first to beat the world's best players in competitive eSports, but quickly warned that increasingly powerful artificial intelligence like OpenAI's bot - which learned by playing a "thousand lifetimes" of matches against itself - would eventually need to be reined in for our own safety. "Nobody likes being regulated, but everything (cars, planes, food, drugs, etc) that's a danger to the public is regulated. AI should be too," Musk said in another tweet on Friday night. Musk has previously express...

Someone is plastering anti-Google ads outside Google's office criticizing CEO Sundar Pichai

A series of anti-Google outdoor ads have popped up in Los Angeles near the Google office in Venice. The ads appear to be related to the saga of James Damore, the Google engineer who was fired earlier this week after writing a 3,000-word essay criticizing Google's diversity policies in which he suggested that biological differences in women could make them less suited to work at Google. He distributed the "memo" widely inside the company. Look at the ads: One ad reads "Goolag," a play on words referring to gulags, the Soviet forced-labor camps from the 20th century. Damore wore a "Goolag" shirt in his headshot taken by a photographer known for photographing other fringe conservative figures, including Mike Cernovich and Milo Yiannopoulous. Other ads are criticizing Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who fired Damore in a company email made available to the public. A New York Times columnist called for Pichai to be fired on Friday. Some of the ads seem to imp...

A Facebook representative confirmed the acquisition when contacted by Business Insider on Friday, but declined to discuss the terms of the deal. Roughly 10 employees work at Fayteq, according to LinkedIn. Deutsche Startups first reported the news. Fayteq sold a software plugin for video editors like Adobe After Effects that could track objects in a video and manipulate or remove them at will. Toyota, Intel and others form big data group for automotive tech

A collection of prominent names in the tech industry have teamed up with Toyota to work on developing big data systems to support self-driving cars and other future automotive advances. Denso, Ericsson, Intel and NTT Docomo joined hands with the Japanese car giant to announce the Automotive Edge Computing Consortium today. The group said it has plans to add “relevant global technology leaders” to its membership this year. The companies have come together to tackle concerns around data usage in connected cars of the future, a critical component to making real-time mapping, driving assistance and other services go from theory to working in practice. Handling the huge volumes of data in a reliable and secure manner is critical. “It is estimated that the data volume between vehicles and the cloud will reach 10 exabytes per month around 2025, approximately 10,000 times larger than the present volume. This expected increase will trigger the need for new architectures of network an...

India-based messaging app Hike is back on the acquisition trail after it picked up Creo , a hardware company that previously released smartphones, streaming devices and an operating system. The price of the deal is undisclosed. Hike released a short statement late on Friday announcing the acquisition, although it does not appear that the 50-person Creo will continue to work on hardware. “The Creo team will begin work on a developer platform to enable third party developers to build services on the Hike platform,” a Hike spokesperson said. Creo recently slashed the price of its Mark 1 smartphone, and it confirmed on its website that it will be its last. “To build our next product, we need all the focus and good luck we can. Owing to this, we will no longer be making new CREO Mark1 devices or releasing any software updates,” it wrote on its website.
